Niall MacArthur is a British painter living near Rye in East Sussex.
Painted during lockdown in 2020 when the situation seemed irredeemably grim and we were all confined to our homes. One sunny afternoon lying on the grass in my garden, looking up at the beautiful blue sky like a prisoner dreaming of escape, with the top of an oak tree still intruding into my vision but otherwise seeing just blue, I wondered who was in those planes, where they were escaping to, and why it wasn't me.
