Julia Hill is a conceptual artist and chromogenic darkroom printer working in New York City. Her work explores the experience of growing up in the Information Age and the rise of the Internet. She is drawn towards the impact of modern surveillance and the evolution of the medium of photography. From film to smartphones, the accessibility of cameras has created an overwhelming abundance of images online. She is interested in exploring the symbiotic relationship of humans to our devices. Her recent photographic work also focuses on artificial environments, digital tourism and curated experiences. Julia earned her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2015. Her work has been exhibited at Field Projects, Local Projects, The Nave Gallery Annex as well as several zines and publications such as Yo-New York, The Hand Magazine, and Ginger Zine.
Artist Statement
On the Threshold is a process based body of work created using surveillance camera footage printed traditionally in the darkroom. A smartphone screen is focused through the lens of an enlarger and the latent image is captured on chromogenic paper. This process creates an otherworldly saturated effect that highlights distortions and pixelation. Viewing footage of publicly available and unprotected surveillance cameras online, I began to question the role of the prolific devices which are constantly streaming.
There is a voyeuristic nature to accessing these cameras, peaking through the window into another place meant to be undisturbed or protected. These tiny squares of information are interwoven into a digital fabric. The persistence of these pixels speaks to the infrastructure of the internet that facilitates life online. Our reliance on these technologies holds a fractured version of all its participants, willingly or not. This work seeks to capture this in-between state, the digital ghost, with the merging of digital and analog photographic practice.
